Teaching

Private Studio

Along with his positions at The Juilliard School and New Jersey City University, Greg teaches privately at his home studio. Year in and year out Greg has high school and middle school students win in placement auditions for the NJMEA region II and all-state ensembles. Greg has also had many students accepted to the best American music schools including Curtis, Juilliard, The Manhattan School of Music, Berkley, Eastman and more. Greg also has students that simply want to get better for their school band, and some adults who want to continue their hobby.

Greg accepts students for all percussion instruments and drum set. For information about private lessons contact Greg:
732-369-3682  or  greggiannascoli@yahoo.com

The drum set student is presented with a combination of intense technical studies (snare drum and drum set), reading, etudes and the study of musical styles including swing, Latin, funk, rock, show, pop and more. Once the student is ready we do quite a bit with standard and modern recordings. Auditioning for an NJMEA jazz ensemble is encouraged.

The percussion student is presented with 4 general areas of study: mallets, timpani, snare drum and traps (cymbals, bass drum, tambourine, triangle and more). Technical studies relating to each instrument are combined with reading and etudes to attain a high level of proficiency on each of the above areas. Solfege is an integral part of the timpani lesson. The advanced student is encouraged to join a youth orchestra and audition for an NJMEA band or orchestra. A much more rigorous program of study will be presented to the student who expresses a desire for a career in music. If the student is ready, Greg will also recommend the possibility of auditioning to move to Juilliard Pre-College.

Many students do combine percussion and drum set in their lessons.

Greg’s private studio is equipped with:

- 5 octave Yamaha 6000 marimba
- 3.5 octave Musser xylophone
- 3 Octave Yamaha gold studio vibe
- Glockenspiel
- 2 drum sets
- set of 4 timpani
- two Noble & Cooley concert snare drums
- 250 watt PA for playing along with music
- concert bass drum
- all hand held percussion instruments (tambourines, triangles, etc.)
- conga and bongo drums
- much more

The Juilliard School, Pre-College Division

If you are a high school or middle school student who is planning a career in music, this program is the place to be. The JPC program is intense and will have you well prepared for conservatory level auditions. Conservatories and universities will take a hard look at your application if you are a JPC graduate. The required preliminary DVD recording for the Juilliard upper level division is waived for JPC students.

If you love music and are talented enough to enter the program, but do not want to pursue a career in music, JPC will still be a most impressive addition to your resume for any college application. It shows a very high level of artistry and commitment.

Juilliard Pre-College is much more than just percussion lessons. You will be involved with extremely talented musicians in every instrument family. The performing ensembles, including orchestra and percussion ensemble, are top notch. The theory and history classes will prepare you to score at the top of entrance exams for any college level music program.

Greg teaches mallets / marimba and is joined by two wonderful teachers: Jonathan Haas, our percussion coordinator, teaches timpani / conducts percussion ensemble and Pablo Rieppi teaches snare drum. The students will rotate lessons through the three of us. This method has been most successful. Just last year our graduating high school senior percussion students were accepted to Curtis, Juilliard, Manhattan School of Music, Eastman, Boston University and Mannes.

New Jersey City University

Greg is coordinator of percussion studies at NJCU where he conducts the percussion ensemble and teaches private studio lessons. NJCU has a strong program with both performance and music education majors. The percussion student is presented with 4 general areas of study: mallets, timpani, snare drum and multi-percussion / traps. Technical studies relating to each instrument are combined with reading, etudes, chamber music and solos to attain a high level of proficiency on each of the above areas. Orchestral, modern and commercial music is all covered in our program. Greg is joined by two wonderful teachers: David Fein, principal percussionist with the New Jersey Symphony and Randall Hicks, principal timpanist with the New Jersey Symphony. NJCU is a very short train stop from Manhattan. Our students regularly attend the master classes held at Juilliard and The Manhattan School of Music and often attend performances throughout Manhattan.
